They have a Highland Fling Weekend that is really...um...unique. Our pipe band (Cabar Feidh) is going to give the Red Thistle Pipes and Drums a hand this year...well, some of us from Cabar Feidh will go and play all day long.
I have seen some amazing "kilts" One was a plaid shirt wrapped around this guys waist. (I think there might have been 2 so that he was wrapped all around. The women, on the other hand, can be quite "fetching" as they might say.
Generally, the public will pony up the cost of a beer (sometimes even a Guinness) just to get a wee private concert.
Folks there do tend to think that those of us who wear a kilt, for whatever reason we wear them, are wearing a costume.
The most stupid question I am asked at this particular festival. "Can ya play them?" pointing towards the pipes cradled in my arms. My answer... buy me a beer and I'll show you.

Nick, I hold a lot of respect for what you do, based on the few pics I've seen here. There is SO MUCH mis-info on Scotland that it can be hard to seperate, especially for unintiated and under informed. What some consider one of the best, Linda Byrd's "The Scots: A Glimpse of Gaelic Clothing and Accoutrements of the eighteenth century," is riddled with anacronisms and things simply WRONG. Most "costume" books are worse. I've seen WAY to many "modern" kilts passed off as eighteenth century, or even the sixteenth or FIFTEENTH century.
Holywood, generally, DOES NOT HELP!!!!
I would love to be involved with a group that is Scot specific and covers more than one period, so I can learn more and more about the many facets of Scot history.

[QUOTE=mddock58]I think it is really bad when the vendors display a skewed reality.
Renn Faires are not really in the same league with "reenacting", they were not designed that way in the first place. They have been since they started, designed to be an "escape" from today, to the "fun" days we believe it may have been back then.
I agree. Two vendors had very poor approximations of kilts for sale. Basically gathered fabric with no taper, WIDE pleats, and not maching the tartan to set or stripe.
I tried to enjoy this event for what it was, entertainment.
There were many wonderful entertainers. Has anyone heard of
Scotish Mayhem? They were a great bagpipe band.

The Faire's are terrific fun. Ever notice how there are sooo many experts and information spouts, and sooo few of them that haven't a clue as to what they're talking about nor whom it is they're talking to? Imagine some of those folks asking qestions and sharing their need-to-know curious interests before shedding so much light upon their own vacancy of facts.
It is a delight to meet people with questions and accurate info and fun experiences to talk about.
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?
