Welcome to X Marks the Scot from sunny California.

I second the recommendation for Stillwater Kilts for the traditional kilt look. For under $150 you can get a Stillwater Standard kilt, hose, flashes, a belt, and a kilt pin. For about $200 you can have upgrade the Standard to a heavyweight. Not a bad way to have a pretty decent outfit. If kilt wearing isn't for you, you aren't out too much. If you do like it (and we hope you do) you have a first kilt in yopur collection you won't be embarrassed by later on.

Also I have heard nothing but glowing reviews about Rocky and company. Rocky is a gentleman and a pleasure to deal with. My next kilt is going to be from them.

Either way, you are in good hands.

    Cheers

    Welcome from Phoenix!

Are you thinking a traditional Scottish appearance or are you thinking a contemporary solid-color kilt?

Welcome! And either SWK or a USAK will make you happy. Both are good kilts at a good price. They both have advantages and drawbacks. Just read the opinions on this forum and make your decision. You will be happy with either.

Greetings and Welcome from the Deep South (US)!!!!

    Define "expensive"?

    For Tartan:
Matt Newsome's kilts are REALLY nice 4 yard box pleat wook kilts. At $350, their a steal for what they are. This one will NEVER leave your rotation. Matt can even alter (to a point) that kilt in case of notable weight gain or loss.

USA Kilts is great at a somewhat lower price bracket. They are of good quality, but most are poly viscose, not wool (which can be seen as either a pro or con dependant upon perspective and needs).

In the lowest acceptable price bracket, Stillwater seems good, from what I hear.

If brave and have more time than money, I'd suggest Barb T.'s book "The Art of Kiltmaking." It is VERY HELPFUL for the "do it yourselfer," like me.
