This last vacation I took seven kilts, wore one, six on hangers in garment bags. Would have been a lot easier to have the unworn kilts be rolled and in a piece of luggage. But would also have been nice to have hangars ready at the hotel to let them hang out. Taking the kilts in garment bags provided the hangars...even with the hassle....

And no, the hotel hangars didn't have clips.

So yes, an inexpensive roller would have been nice....if there were also a way to transport hangars...

I ran into the same dillema our week in a hotel in Flagstaff. I rolled the two kilts I had at the time, and they were fine. But, never thought to bring clipped hangers to let them hang out.

Yes, there is a need for an inexpensive kilt roll...

I have only ever seen 3 brands... the one that Lochcarron sells is nice, but WAY overpriced. They mark up the manufacturer's price and import it to the states (retails for about $80 if I'm not mistaken). I saw 2 other companies while over at the trade show in Scotland... both were much more reasonably priced, but when you added the shipping, they went WAY out of the pricerange.

The basic "kilt roll" that these companies are offering is not much more than a "pool cue carrier". Some of them offer a semi-rigid plastic sheet to aid in rolling (put kilt on plastic sheet and roll sheet). I've been looking for a decent carrier that could RETAIL for $40 or so (wholesale for about 1/2 that)

I always thought a tube of some kind which you could put your kilt in to carry would be a good idea somthing like what daughtsmans used to put his drawings in before the computer came into the world. With maybe a screw on top to add protection

Take a look at these two from Kiltstore, which go for $33 and $38, respectively, plus an X-Marks Discount. Still have to pay shipping, though.

I have given thought to trying (when I actually have a kilt) some of the fabric that you see on flexible drainage piping. I think I can get just the fabric at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. It is a cottony-looking, stretchy tube that you could cut to length, put over your arm, and pull down over the rolled kilt. I also plan to investigate the possibility of using a stuff-sack for one of those small-size folding chairs that yo can get for 5 bucks or so. They have a shoulder strap and you could combine both these approaches for max kilt protection. Once I get the kilt I"ll try it and report back.

Just a thought, but for those kilts that have the two loops at either hip, you can fold them so the loops come together and hang the kilt on a peg. This is their original purpose in the military kilt, at least for the other ranks who didn't get much closet space in barracks.

Since we all know how expensive kilts can get, I'm making my first demo kilt-carrier/ roller from duck cloth. I'll have a pic up when I manage to get the first one finished.

I like the idea of the folding chair bag, but I think it may not be stiff enough, the rolled kilt will just flop.

based on the previous post, the one I am designing will be semi-rigid. It won't be solid, like a plastic case, but will have a stiffener sewn in to prevent it from just flopping over like a wet noodle.

That was my thought too, if the bag is used alone. But if encased in a tube, such as a nylon stocking, orthopaedic webbing (stretchy elastic/cotton used in casting) or the drainage tubing I mentioned above, I think the kilt wouldn't flop - the "casing" would help maintain the rolled shape and the stuff sack functions as the carrier and an extra layer of protection.
