ok, so I've decided that I want the tattoo shown in the link above, but I need another bit of advice. I want to make it more my own, so I am tossing aroung the idea of making the inset color red instead of greenish blue.
any thoughts?
Simple don't just ask us. Instead take it to the person that will do the work and see how they would make it unique.
Good choice. I am adding the father knot to the tattoo on my back in the very near future. Still finishing the design though. Each arm is dedicated to one of the kids, and I will add a knot for each on my back which already has the luckenbooth for my wife and I.
Good idea about the other calf for the next kid. Are you going to add your son's name?

yeah red would be cool, but i think the greenish blue is more celtic.
When I think celt....immediatley I think of Scottish highlands, green thistles, or Irish shamrocks.
How about that father knot, (also make sure it's nice and big and fits your calf, you don't hang a tiny picture on a big wall) then fill the inside perhaps with an illumniated letter. There are lots of examples of illuminated letters on the net. Have you ever seen the Book of Kells? loads in there.
*edit*
I've tried to sorta do up a rough design with photoshop. What do you think?
I chose the letter "q" for Quinn. The q has an oak leaf in it.
sorry it's so rough, a tattoo artist would get what you mean though and be able to make it look like the father knot on the lucky fish site.
edit again: looks like i screwed up that knot. my sketch has points inward but not the same as Pat Fish's knot. But you get the idea right???

I've just been home from the tattoo shop. The tattooist ( Doyle is his name ) did a fantastic job. I went with a father's knot ( see above posts ), but did the coloring a bit different. If you look, you will see a celtic cross in the center of the father's knot. I opted to not have this colored at all. The other spaces between the rope in the knot were colored red, and the rope itself was shaded and highlighted.
The knot as a whole is for my son, Quinn. The red is from my clan tartan, MacTavish ( Thompson Red). The cross is exactly that, a cross. Not representative of any specific religion, but a combination of the scottish/celtic heritage and the courage and faith it takes to keep that heritage alive and strong.
Anyway, the tat hasn't healed enough for a good pic yet. I'll post one tomorrow evening, when the swelling is down and the bleeding stops.
thanks for all the help!!!
oh, if you are ever in Tulsa, OK and need some ink done, stop by Brookside Tattoo and Piercing. They are great! Let me know and I'll put in a good work with the owner ( he lives across the street from me!)

Good for you KT,
I'm still jonesing for a couple more tats myself...always wondered if maybe I could find an artist who'd just use the needles on me for a while - without any ink - just to get the endorphine rush from the needles...I think there might be a market there...???
Just a half hour of inkless needling to mediacate the tattoo jones until I figure out what I want where with ink....

Can't wait to see it KT. The father knot is a nice one.
I just got work done in May http://static.flickr.com/48/14087106...g?v=1146842939 but already I am sketching out how I want to finish off the one on my back.
