I love to hear it when non Scottish people are wearing the kilt. I don't personally think it was tacky, but an excellent choice in fashion and taste.
The greatest resistance in my situation comes from my family as well. Our family has been in the states for centuries and I think they want me to be a more homogenized American. But it's my personal decision to wear it regardless.
I had a lady friend at school who told me this great advice. "If they don't like it, (terrible expletive) them."
Of course, she was a biker chick. ^_^
