Monarch of the Glen Tartan Question

I just finished season II of "Monarch of the Glen". The last episode featured a Highland Games sponsored by the Clan MacDonald. I noticed that Hector and Molly wore one tartan while Archie wore another  Now Golly and Duncan I understand why they would wear different tartan. But why would Archie (as new clan chief) be wearing a different tartan than his father (the old clan chief)? I know this sounds really nit-picky. I was just wondering if anyone had any idea why, other than to make the characters stand out better.

    Cheers

Hey...great minds think alike...I've been wondering about that as well. The parents seem to have a browner/more purple tartan as opposed to the Macdonald that Archie is wearing. I found that "hector and Molly" tartan most attractive...can't wait to hear form one of our resident experts.

There are more than a few MacDonald tartans. I'm pretty sure Archie (as laird) was wearing a MacDonald tartan (perhaps an older sett with muted colors). I'll have to go back and watch that episode again

Archie was wearing one with a lot of red and black, didn't seem muted though. I'm with auld argonian that the other tartan was quite smashing.

    tartans

Where the MacDonalds wearing this tartan?

    http://www.ecossefilms.com/completed/monarchfs.html

Looks like MacDonald of Clanrannald to me.

Another image of the same tartan.

    http://tombaker.tv/abouttom/monarch.htm

I did an image search through the yahoo search engine, resulted in over 4,000 hits under "Monarch of the Glenn." I've only seen the show twice, so I don't recall who all the characters are. I found another kilted image of one of the younger fellows sliding down a railing face first in a Stewart Hunting kilt. Well, it appeared to be Stewart Hunting..

Maybe these are the two tartans in question...

but what about Duncan'sKlt ? is it a Hunting Stewart? I could never tell by watching the show because his kilt always seemed so muted.

    I agree

I agree that they are probably ancient colors. That is the MacDonald of Clanrannald. If any are interested, do an image search on yahoo, using the heading "Monarch of the Glenn." There were other images of the Clanrannald in modern. The web addresses were so long I could not be bothered to hyperlink them.

There was another image of a an actor in a kilt where the page came up Not Found. That might have been a different tartan. The thumbnail was too small to tell. This tartan I am speaking of seemed to have a red base color.

I'm going to take a wild stab at this and say that whatever this tartan is, that is in question that was described in the first entry of this thread; is probably a popular tartan. I do not think they would put a TV show together like this, and have kilts made in obscure tartans. MacDonald of Clanrannald and hunting Stewart are popular tartans. If this other tartan in question is not a Stewart hunting, it's probably something nearly equally as popular.?.? I suggest doing a tartan search online,,, like at Tartans Authority and visit Monarch of the Glenn fan websites. Fans always have all kinds of pics posted on websites. Or freeze frame the DVD, take a good digital camera and snap a pic.... ps. turn the flash off.

It's been my understanding that Duncan's kilt was/is Hunting Stewart...it always seems to be very dark, though...I always wondered what the deal was with that.

They ran the episode where Donald MacDonald tries to take over the Lairdship from Paul just this evening...the whole thing ends in a big investiture ceremony for Paul and everybody (including that dude from the Tasters Choice commercials) was wearing kilts. That MacDonald of Clanranald appeared on both Molly and Donald...now that I'm trying to remember, I can't recall if Paul was wearing that or the "regular" MacDonald. Again: that is one beautiful tartan...but there are so many that are great...
