There is a recent thread on this forum somewhere (can't find it in the few minutes before I must leave for work) on the longevity of kilt materials. The issue of pilling if addressed there well.
If you have ever held and felt 13 or 16 oz worsted wool, it feels like coarse heavy canvas (not "fuzzy" at all). It should not pill at all, unless REALLY ABUSED by chain. A non-worsted wool will pill, but not bad.

I'd just avoid wearing a sporran with a UK altogether. That's what all those pockets are for.
