    shades

Most just choose a tartan in a particular shade because, that's what they like. Ancient, modern, muted, weatherd,.... are all the same tartan. Just different shades. Lighten up.

Be weary of drawing ones own conclusions....

I say, if you like the look of the Clergy Muted tartan, PJ, than go for it.

No offense, though, but you don't strike me as muted clergy...

The only thing muted about me is my moderation?

I have to say that after reading most of Matt's blogs on Albanach.org and related links from the tartan museum site, I find his posts in this thread and elsewhere to be completely consistent with what he presents on those sites. He presents a balanced approach to educating people about the history and significance of the tartan system, and promotes appropriate choices about selecting and wearing the tartan. I see no hint of self-promotion in his educational articles. He strikes a very sensitive balance between educating the readers and offering his services as a kiltmaker, with no conflict of interest that I can see. I have notice the same thing about all the kiltmakers on these forums. They first advise, assist, and educate, and are typically reticent about promoting their services. Kudos to all of you!!

If all I were interested in were making money, I'd open up an Ebay store and sell Pakistani imports all day long. Instead, I choose to sell quality products, and don't usually sell a kilt without exchanging a dozen emails and usually a few phone calls with the client to make sure he gets exactly what he wants and is making an informed decision. Really, I only sell kilts to support my kilt making habit (have to have something to do with all these kilts I'm making, might as well sell them!). I take pride in my work, and by that I mean both making kilts and writing about them.

So really, let's not judge motives here, ok...
Well said Matt. No one on this board, save the people that know Matt on a personal level, KNOW his motives and to take a BOLD LEAP and imply that he's "just in it for the money" is a HIGHLY egregious statement. Have you seen the man's website? Have you read the HUNDREDS of hours of research and time and effort he's put into this "kilt thing"? That's a LOT of work to "turn a quick buck" off of kilts.

In Matt's defence, it's tough to be a kiltmaker on public boards b/c our thoughts / motives will always be "suspect". I think that on the whole MOST of the kiltmakers up here show a great respect for the "fun" nature of this board and don't JUST use it to "troll for customers". Most of us are here b/c we enjoy our craft and like to talk to people who appreciate what we do. We like to get feedback and expose differeing opinions about different issues. If you want to see us as having a "conflict of interest", then please ignore every post that we put up here.

BTW... food for thought... would this board be NEARLY as interesting or as fun without people like Matt or ANY kiltmakers for that matter?
