    Made Reversible Tartan Flashes

This is a companion to the Mini-Kilt assembly in pictues.

I decided to make single flashes that wouldn't be huge on a ladies calf. I made two of each of the base colors of the kilt (blue and green). So that they would be reversible and the wearer would have more choices in hose to wear with them and the kilt. You could always double the recipe for men's flashes.

First I made 1.5 inch strips of light weight black canvas about 16" long that I attached to the 11" strips of tartan using hot fusing. You can buy the fuseable canvas but I made do.

I then used more fusing to attach the two different colored halves together.

Then you cut them and notch them.

I serged the edges of the canvas befor folding over and sewing it down. to form a loop for the elastic.

Then insert lengths of Elastic (wait for email re: calf size) and finally sew on velcro.

There you have it reversible flashes. O'Neille

That's an idea as brilliant as it is simple.

You could even use two solid colours. Ha, a flash of genius

Tartan flashes really add that finishing touch. My wife just made a set for me in Ancient Caledonian. Nice work.

For do-it-yourselfer, here is a simple and cheap way to make the elastic part of a MODERN garter (as opposed to the old tied type):

Measure and cut the elastic to fit calf, allowing room to make loops at the ends. (that is normal for all)

    For attatchment:
Use the Bikini/bra hook (available 2 a pack for CHEAP by Dritz and at any fabric store- in metal or clear plastic).

Loop the hook onto one side (as a buckle) and make a loop (overlap) on the other end of the elastic.

Hook as hooking a bikini top (for those with girlfriends and wives, just ask, if not done either on or off before).

It make a very cheap garter strap that is one size fits one person (with a little give for small increases and decreases in calf size). It lacks the adjustablility of store/internet ones, but how much adjustablilty does one need for one person?

The end result is easy to make and easy to use. Also, one can make MANY pairs with little cost, so more $$$ for kilts, bonnets, and accessories!
