    Playing LPs On Your Computer

Over in another thread the subject turned to LPs. I've been recording them into my computer and then putting them on my IPod or CDs. Since this seems to be an arcane subject I thought I'd list a few sites that tell you how to do it. It's really not that hard or expensive.

These first two are from Microsoft and I used them because they have good pics and we all know that a picture is worth a thousand words.

Soundforge is the only program I've used so there may be better ones out there.

This site is in the UK and has info on 78s.

My numpty brother decided to do this a few years ago and pissed away in excess of $600 in hardware and software in order to transcribe a dozen albums....of course, I pointed out that he could have just bought them on CD for considerably less than he spent on the means to computerize them.

Last I heard, he was making noises about selling all of the stuff on ebay and hopefully recouping some of his "investment".

Well...this guy thought that Amiga was going to be THE computing platform as well...go figger.

I have heard of a site where they are posting digitized versions of recorded stuff that is so obscure that they consider it a public service to "pirate" it and make it available just to keep it "alive". While I generally don't agree with infringing on anyone's copyright, I do draw a line past which something that's rare should be made available one way or another to preserve it.

I have yet to hook everything up and digitize some discs...it's not difficult with a Mac.

Thank you! I've been wondering how to do that for a while now. Now all I need is a turntable that'll play 78s. I've got a huge stack of them, mostly Italian opera, but also a Victor Borge, and some original Susa and Goodman recordings, and I don't want them to degrade any more than they have.

Hey SB, do you use the downloadable trial version, or do you need to have the whole thing for satisfactory results?

I really don't know, the full version of Soundforge is all I've ever used.

I called a friend of mine who does music recording and he refered me to a free program called Audacity. I was told it's an open source program and apparently has a large following. Here's the links he gave me to check out:

    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Here's a link to a Soundforge forum, which I never knew existed.
