All the flavor of Scotch without the bite. Bush Mills is favorite
I prefer Irish whiskey, too. I like Jamesons better than Bushmills.

I like trying lots of different whiskies but I have found that my friends who are not Scotch drinkers respond well to Bunnahabhain 12 year old. It has enough flavor to satisfy me but it's smooth enough to be approachable for the others.

Hey, Steve, I was never a Scotch drinker either until about 6 mos. ago. My first (& you never forget your first ) was a Macallan 12-yr - it was love at first sip...
My personal favorite now is Cragganmore, but I find Laphroaig & Aberlour A'bunadh are mighty fine, too.
While googling single malts I came across this interesting site. I haven't purchased anything from them yet, but I like the idea of "test driving" a whisky with a sampler bottle before dropping $60 or $70 on something I may not enjoy. I think the first thing I might try ordering is the "Classic Malts of Scotland" set. I've read that these 6 single malts have been carefully selected to represent the whisky producing regions of Scotland.

Panache Wrote,
For bourbon, the only one I could imagine drinking straight would be Maker's Mark

Another good site to go through is www.spiritscorner.com
they are based in Spain, but are very reliable, with a wide selection of spirits to choose from.

An American-based seller (that Iolaus showed me to help me score major points last year with the wife) of all sorts of alcoholic beverages is High Times Wine Cellar. They have stuff that I didn't even know was available in the US until I visited them.
Example: Jennifer (my wife) fell in love with Bunnahabhain while we were in Glasgow in early 2004 and we were told that we couldn't get it in America. Well, I found it there... and Jenn got it for our anniversary last year!
Check them out.

Have you tried Woodford Reserve? a friend of mine was a confirmed Maker's man, but when he tried the Woodford at my suggestion he made the switch right there.

aye- exactly richt...
maist malts (an a' blended whiskies) are roon 40-43% alcohol... an dinnae need water...
if ya get a bottle o' "cask strength" malt -the alcohol will bae 50-71%... (a'bunadh is cask strength) an oiny thing o'er 50% will burn yur taste buds aff...
ya need tae put a couple wee drops o water in it - just enough tae lower the alcohol tae 40-43%....
