It took 30 years for the corporate world to embrace jeans. It wasn't until the 80's people started to wear jeans to work. Thanks to Steve Jobs, he made it cool to wear a tweed jacket with a pair of jeans.
And you know what, torn jeans and T-shirts are acceptable, and no one will question you about your heritage, sexual orientation or whether you are wearing underwear. However, I don't wear torn jeans or T-shirt to my corporate job. I wear them when I off work. They are simply not appropiate for the office.
You can't blame your manager for redfining the dresscode. It sucks, but it is the reality. If you don't like it, you can always get a different job. You can always shop for a job that will allow you to wear your kilts. We all know that job is out there somewhere. You just have to find it. Don't blame your manager for not letting you wear your kilt. He doesn't owe you anything. In fact, it is the other way around. He is the manager and he has the RIGHT to tell his employees how he wants them to dress to present the company in a professional manner.
Let's face the reality here. It is not easy to explain the kilt to some one who doesn't wear it. It is like explaining why Soccer(Football) is a beautiful game to the average Americans.
