But the letter of the (Phoenix) law prohibits *any* discrimination. And there are no doubt some Phoenix bureaucrats just bored enough to get a kick out of helping a guy wear a kilt!
We've got a similar local ordinance here in Tucson, and the co. I work for is pretty adamant about avoiding even the appearance of any sort of discrimination....

I was really just asking because I was curious. Kilts are becoming more popular all the time, they are on TV and in magazines, I might just wait a year or so and approach this at a later date.
REALLY I would MUCH rather fight the battle of the shopping malls and let someone else be the pioneer at work.
.....and yes I know it is not supposed to be a crusade and I'm just supposed to enjoy myself......but what if I worked 12 hours a day, had a three hour commute, and expected to get eight hours of sleep each night?
Then my work day WOULD be my life and if I was never allowed to wear kilts at work (while women could wear whatever they wanted) then it wouldn't make sense to even think about wearing kilts at all.
So....while many of you are wishing that kilts never catch on and never become popular I'm hoping that someday men can wear something other than boring pants every day, even in conservative companies.
In the meantime, I am having my fun and I'm happy.

Geez, this thread has sure gotten off-course from the original question...
If kilts never really catch on, that's fine by me. I enjoy being unique & standing out from the crowd - I always have. Right now, kilts fit in well with that way of livin'.
If kilts do ever catch on (I ain't holdin' my breath), I'll still wear 'em 'cuz there so dang comfortable!
Happiness? I'd settle for being less annoyed!!!

They probably said the same thing about pants for women back in the 1950's - certainly they will never catch on....why would women want to wear pants??

If kilts never catch on it will make absolutely no difference to me. No, that's not quite true, I don't neccessarily want kilts to catch on. I used to be confused (but flattered) when people would tell me that I wear the kilt well. I didn't understand what they meant. Now that I've been to a few Highland games and seen what some people wear and call a kilt and how some people can wear a perfectly good kilt but make it look like rubbish I understand. When somebody expresses an interest in the kilt I enthusiastically encourage them and offer what little help or advice I can. I do not, however, want every Tom Dick and Harry putting on a kilt without care and knowledge simply because "it's what men wear"! Let the sheep continue to wear trousers and leave the kilts to those who are passionate about them and care enough to learn about what they are doing.

p.s. as I've posted before, I'm not allowed to wear my kilt at work except for special events either, but it has made me that much more aware of the value of the kilt for me and made me even more dedicated to wearing the kilt and fostering kilt wearing among the cognoscenti like all you folks here.

You certainly have a knack for asking a question that is sure to get an answer or two.
...but what if I worked 12 hours a day, had a three hour commute, and expected to get eight hours of sleep each night?
I'd get a new job.

You really have no idea. If you could see inside my mind you would be truly frightened. I have on occasion given close friends a tiny peek at what goes on in there and they said please.....don't tell us any more.
