To answer your question: you tell them you're wearing it because it's comfortable and you like it. The key thing is to say it with confidence as it is a fact. Self-confidence is the most convincing way to sell people on your kilt-wearing. Then sit back and watch them hem and haw and try to process the information. After a while, it'll even get amusing for you.
There are lots of answers to the various questions you'll get about your kilt-wearing available on this site. Take a look around at the various posts and soak up the ambience... you'll get the hang of it.
