Welcome to the kilted universe. Are you the owner of a Mountain Kilt like REI sells? A little descripton or picture would help. O'Neille

    First time out...

So, I wore the Mountain Kilt out of the house for the first time today. I went hiking in the beautiful San Bernardino mountains to give it a trial run, and I must say that it passed with flying colors. This is perhaps the most comfortable day of hiking I've ever had, even in the blazing desert heat of southern CA! (It's nice to have the extra bit of built-in air conditioning ).

Here's a pic of me sporting it on the trail:

I have to say that today I was pretty self-conscious about my comfortable, but non-mainstream fashion choice. I didn't run into anybody on the trails, but I did have to stop and get gas at a station that's right on Colorado Blvd (a busy road here in Pasadena). I know a couple of people noticed, but didn't say anything. This is a good test of one's ability to be able to make and be comfortable with choices that others might not understand. One of those character-building experiences - liberating in so many ways .

Thanks, again, for the all the welcomes I've gotten.

    Happy kilting!

A belated welcome from the south of England.

It is not really for me to invite you, but whilst I am on a visit to Palm Springs next month, a group of X Markers is planning on getting together on the evening of 14th October. Any chance of your joining us there? I am hoping to meet up with as many of my fellow kilties as possible whilst on my first visit to California and it would be great to include you ...... also it would be a great opportunity for you to meet some of the kilted brethren in your area!

I have asked for a speedy confirmation that this event is actually taking place, so watch the "Kilt Nights" section for details.

Thanks, everyone, for the further welcomes. I'm looking to get my first "real" kilt and researching my family to figure out which tartan I should get if I go the family route. Since I'm a poor graduate student, though, I think I'll have to go with the Sport Kilt, so I may be getting the California or the Black Watch.

Hamish, thanks so much for the Palm Springs invite. Unfortunately, I have a lot going on that weekend, so I don't think I'll be able to make it. But I am hoping to get to Britain next summer to investigate some more of my roots, so perhaps I can make it down to Sussex.

    Blessings.

    - Bernie

Welcome from sunny Florida! You'll get used to wearing the kilt in no time.

That's a shame, Bernie, but those of us who make it will understand.

If you DO get over here next year, be sure to let me know.
