I too am going to be looking for a sgian dubh this month. I'm planning on getting a couple for different occasions in the next few months but this one is what I think I want to get first -

It's a heathergem in the hilt which I think is a little unusual.

might I ask where you found this beauty?

I have one of the fake wood handled sgians. The blade is alright, but not edged. This sgian is definitely a dress-knife. I bought mine at the Enumclaw games. It does look good, so if you like it, go for it... it is highly unlikely that you would ever endanger your sgian, or have cause to need a functional one.
I would like a functional sgian myself though, as I like edged steel (my dirk is a Hanwei early style... I might get a Rittersteel brass handle next, or go custom). I know a semi-local blademaker who does sgians, starting at about $65 I think... and they should be functional pieces. If they aren't, I am sure he'd be glad to make one as such. That being said, does anyone know where one can get a functional dubh, that still looks like a sgian dubh? Ie: Not BUDK, or any of that stuff. As much as I am into swords, I have relatively few sources for the smaller things.

    Walkerk:
Those do look pretty nice. The dirk (I think the handle was Cocobolo) looks really nice, at least what you can see of it does.
There was nothing mentioned about those sgians having an edge though. I try and stay away from stainless steel... it's good for knives, but horrible for swords..and I am more of a sword geek than a knife geek. Although it is nice to have the "traditional" accessories of sgian, dirk, basket hilt, and targe. Like I said...I'm a dork for weapons.

They make sgians for several retailers. It is actually a nice inexpensive sgian.

I am waiting for delivery on a full custom. I'll post pics.

I've got a blackwood with false emerald in the handle and it looks wonderful with almost any outfit. It came with a very nice leather sheath.

Has anyone ever gotten any flak for carrying a sgian? Like, anyone try to stop you for carrying a knife?
