Thanks for posting the draft -- gave me something different to read during lunch. The more times and places you go about kilted, you'll add to your store of reactions.

Having been around the NY metro area kilted -- from Wall Street, the West Village, Lincoln Center, Grand Central to the 'burbs, I can say I've never had a hostile reaction. Gals are generally in the "I love it!" camp. Some guys do get edgy -- had that with some Central/South American gents -- but on the whole most say they wish they had the onions to wear one...or their ladies tell me they wish their guys had the onions to wear one...

Other observations while kilted:

- complete strangers readily approach me and start kilt-related conversations -- never ever had a similar experience while in trousers.

- you're missing many reactions in your wake. Have someone trail you at a distance to catch all the reactions you're missing. My wife gets a kick out of watching the double-takes and the occasional "See! I told you to wear yours!!"

Regardless of how many kilties gather, we're still in the minority. While we view wearing a kilt as nothing unusual, it is a rare sight to most folks.
I think that we comprise a relatively small subculture, in comparison to the dominant culture of the U.S. So, unless kilt wearing becomes entrenched in the mainstream culture, we will always be a subculture, and kilt wearing will never be the norm as a whole, thus kilt wearing is considered deviance. Deviance is definied as ANYTHING that is a departure from the norms. Not "from the normal" as that is a very subjective word...but norm: an established standard of behavior maintained by a society. And "by a society is usually accepted as "by the dominant society", as I think that part would go without saying.

Good paper so far. Congratulations on choosing kilt wearing as your deviance. There are certianly worse things that you could do, some that would even get you arrested! But I have to point out that if you choose to d something out of the norm, it is not deviance for you. If it is, you are accepting society's labels for your actions. As Robert Heinlein said in one of his books, if the whole world says one thing and I believe differently, it is up to them to change my mind!
