If kilts were like cars, I might make the following comparisons
Utilitykilts -> SUVs
Stillwater kilts -> Honda Civics
Handsewn traditionals -> BMW
Different manufacturers, quality, and functions, but all the same basic item although tough to compare on a point by point basis.

... That differs from a UK in that their pleat edges are sewn all the way down, both on the inner and outer edges of each pleat.
... Because if they weren't, you'd end up with a garment looking rather similar to gathered skirt after the first wash.
