The green thing is part of the kilt. I am not sure what it does, perhaps it marks the top of the rise, perhaps it was used to ensure proper dress (such as aligning one's belt)... any other ideas?

It's simply the waistband. As to why it was made out of green cloth rather than tartan, I do not know.

The green is the waistband. It's authentic to military kilts and still used today. Since those pics I altered it buy covering the green with black bias tape. I think it looks better and was an easy modification.

Bubba, great looking kilt. From previous discussions, I believe the pleats are the military box-pleat style, correct?

Ever since I spotted and handled one of those beauties on a shop's rental rack, I've longingly watched several offerings on eBay go by... until recently. Some guy had one made up while he was in a pipe band, and is now selling it to me. I can't wait to receive it and examine it. If it does not meet expectations, then I'll just have to make one myself!

I'd be interested in seeng a side by side comparison to an authentic Issue kilt and one of these reproductions. If anyone has both to compare I'd appreciate it. O'Neille

The WPG is a reproduction of the WW I to early WW II vintage kilts. More modern military kilts are a bit lighter and different in texture. The WPG is 22 oz heavy wool, the modern kilts are 18 oz with a finer finish. They do still use the green waistband though. The Cameron from WPG is the military box pleat.

Well, this thing is a reproduction of a 22oz MOD kilt... so it should be burly!!
This is possibly one of the worst cases of anxiety yet... just cause this is totally new for me... the other stuff, I can be patient on, since I know that takes a while to make... but this is already in the mail and on it's way.

I bought one through Ebay a while ago. It is so heavy, I feel I can hardly stand up in it. The enormous quantity of material in the pleats makes the back drag down unless I get it belted up really tight.

It came in useful last winter when the heating borke down, otherwise it stays in th cupboard.
