    Hmmm...
You're right, that isn't exactly formal, but does clean up nice to be sure.
Although I like the idea of a darker brown jacket, that certainly looks good. I guess if brown is all I have at the time of the banquet, than that is what I shall wear... perhaps I can dig up a cleaner blak shirt than what I have at the moment in order to make a better appearance.

So, if most of you say to leave the Jacobite shirt at home, what functions would you wear them too?

Frankly, none. Maybe a Ren Faire.

Is that because you view them as outdated, or because you view them as outlandish?

I actually like the look... but that could easily be just me.

Outlandish. They look like part of a pirate costume. But, just as you say, that's just me. We all have our preferences.

Ironically, it might be appropriate today, this being "Talk Like a Pirate Day." www.talklikeapirate.com

You could get away with one in a casual setting. For instance, I have seen people wearing similar shirts with jeans. The problem is that they have a "period" look to them, so they don't look like modern wear.

    Brown Tuxeudo

It is in fact possable to do formalwear in brown, blue whatever and it WOULD be formal. The problem is that the symbology is that black tie is well, black. For example an Army "Dress Blue" is a tux equivilant even though it isn't black, the black bow tie is your clue as to it's formality.
