Earlier this year, I ordered about $150 worth of stuff from them.
1.) My items arrived in about 20 days
2.) No duty again.
Maybe I'm lucky, but my dealings with them have been quite good so far. The only disappointment I've had is their apparent inability to answer emails quickly (less than 48 hours), but each one of my emails has been answered.
Clearly your order was not send via Fedex. This just illustrates how inconsistently the customs regulations area applied here.

You're right, I don't believe they were. I can't remember what carrier was used in either case, but FedEx was definitely not it.

Not entirely true turpin, I only paid $30 cdn for duties on the jacket/waistcoat combo I got from them, $35 on the 8 yard handsewn kilt, and $0 on the dress sporran I have gotten from them in the past 2 years. Not bad at all. I am glad it was UPS not Fedex or I would have really been nailed for duties and taxes.

If I remember correctly, as a comonwealth nation Canada has a special relationship with the UK with respect to import duties. In any case, the duty itself for me was $42 (12.5% of the stated value), but Fedex charges a $25 fee for pocessing a "formal entry". That's my real gripe, being charged twice for that.

Hi,
I also ordered the Hunting Stewart kilt advertised at $50.00 and had it show up as $80.00 on the order form. I did not place the order but instead sent this e-mail to Tartanweb asking for an explanation:
Previous customer here; saw Hunting Stewart 5yd PV on sale for $50.00US but
when placing order total showed as $80.00US. Can you please clarify?
Within three hours I received the following response from Tartanweb:
Sorry about that, it looks like there is an error with the view product
page. The UK price is £50 (Sterling) and the US price is $80, which I'm sure
you will agree is still a great deal.
Apologies for the error.
I am a previous Tartanweb customer and was very pleased with both the customer service and the product and did not have to pay duties. In addition, the response time on today's enquiry was exceptional; your experience may differ.
Bob
In theory there is no difference between theory and practice but in practice there is.

Ah, there's the issue....Fed Ex. Since they act as a broker when bringing in imported stuff, they can charge a fee (not sure what dictates how much or how little). I would rather wait an extra week with express post than pay through the **** with Fed Ex(a brilliantly run company, but a bloody expensive one). I think that wa slikely the differnce, as scottishkilts uses UPS for the rush deliveries and Parcel Force for the not so rushed (no duties owned when I got my dress sporran delivered by them). They also use DHL, but my opinion of them is worse than Fed Ex, so I will keep it to myself.

When I got one of these Irish-American kilts a while back, they sent it via DHL I think... and I never had any extra fees from them. It was via someone else getting over here, which I think was the difference.
