You know.... your post just got me thinking... wouldn't it be great to see a pipe band outfitted in utility kilts!

I've seen solid color pipe bands in Saffron, Maroon, Blue, black and Green (Kelly green), but never camo or anything with pockets.

I think that other pipers wouldn't take them as seriously, so it would have to be a "fun" pipe band, rather than a grade 1 competition band. It's NOTHING against any solid kilt companies... it's just that Bagpipers would probably be the strongest "holdout" of a traditional kilt.

Personally, I think it would look pretty cool (and original) to see a group of 15 or 20 pipers come marching in a parade in contemporary kilts, t-shirts and boots.

If you join a pipe band you undertake the obligation to do the dress and do it to the nines and be judged on it...do you then just offhandedly look down on anyone who doesn't wear a tartan and who might not have as much $ invested in their gear?

Sound slike it would be the equivalent of the Stanford Marching Band for pipes and drums!

OK-Camo Semi-Trad Kilts would be more 'military' than say, caramel UK Workman's.

I used to work at Stanford, and I started looking into the possibility of a Stanford Pipe Band and it occurred to me that considering STANFORD...

....maybe Red Utilikilts or Freedom kilts would be the way to go....

I agree with Rocky, Pipe Bands are about tradition, if they departed from tartan it would only be because of another tradition such as green/ saffron etc.

UK's may suit a celtic rock band on stage somewhere, but never a Pipe Band.

While I love my black hemp kilt with pockets to bits, it will always be a work/casual kilt, not one I wear for formal or semi formal events.

I also have come to love plain contemporary kilts as well as tartans. They all have a place to make full time kilt wearing a real possibility.
