I've come to the same conclusion here in western NC, and I'm just as good at ignoring the stares.

It's been very much the same so far here in Roswell. I'm the only kiltie i've seen around on the streets. I don't go full-time, but it's been often enough on weekends and fridays. I'm either ignored, or engaged with positive comments. The one annoying encounter was with a teacher at a function at my daughter's school last friday. He was with his wife, and started making boyfriend jokey conversation. I asked if he thought I was gay because I was in a kilt, and he backed off of that line of conversation.

At the same event, a little girl asked me "Why are you a leprechaun?". I was so not prepared for that one I had no immediate response. Too bad, it was a good opportunity to expand her knowledge base.

I've been showing the folks at work pics of me from photobucket and they keep asking when I'm going to wear the kilt to work

my first day in a kilt at work

Today was my first kilted day at work. Due to saftey concerns I won't be able to wear a kilt regularly. I had only one bad comment, but a few of my students looked so shocked they didn't know what to say. A few of my fellow faculty came out to watch the students reactions (and laugh). The office secratary was the only one who gave me any grief, even after asking if it was a kilt or a skirt, she continued to call it a skirt. Oh well, at least no one asked me if it was a "gay" thing, although being out as gay may have saved me from that for fear of a sexual orientation discrimination law suit (No I wouldn't sue, but that doesn't make people stop worrying). I wish I had a kilt I was comfortable wearing at work everyday (with saftey concerns). Part of me is thinking I should just keep a pair of shorts in my office and I could change out of the kilt when needed.
    Cheers
    Chris (in Fresno)
