In relation to Steed's tartan, there is some speculation on that subject at this website http://theavengers.tv/forever/peel1-5.htm

It seems the name McNee is associated with the MacGregor clan, and that the tartan Steed wears in the episode was chosen for that reason, i.e. MacGregor.

Incidentally, have you spotted the continuity error as Steed pops out to do a bit of fishing?

For those that missed the original post containing the link to a clip from the episode, here it is again http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLg0JcqAE1A
Thanks Martin. MacGregor does look the tartan in a comparison. Who knows MacNee may have worn his own kilt? The continuity error is a good one! Nice Argyle jacket becomes sweater. Good spot.

I've had a look at some stills from the film and I think it may be the red Haig tartan (called 'Haig Commercial' in the World Register). The sett certainly looks the same and red would reproduce like this in black and white. It is similar to MacGregor but not quite the same. MacGregor has three broad green stripes with a thin white line running along the central one, however Haig has two bold black stripes with a white line, guarded by black (ie: edged by black), running between the black stripes, just like the tartan of Steed's kilt. Also the solid red square is larger in the Haig tartan than MacGregor, as appears to be the case here.

I've just watched the movie clip and the broad stripes don't look black as they did in the stills I looked at earlier. So my appologies, I now think that it is MacGregor after all.

Part of the problem is the kilt looks different in different shots. No apology needed!

The kilt episode notwithstanding, The Avengers was one of the (there were many) great classics to come out of the British entertainment industry.

A number of American productions have their roots based on British shows.
