For nice-looking pleats, 4.5-5yds is plenty. For sheer functionality, one can get by with less. Enlisted soldiers in Highland regiments, when they still wore belted plaids (1740's-1760's), were issued only 3 yard plaids....

One factor to consider is the weight of the fabric. A lighter fabric works well in 6 yards, while my 20-30 oz "saxony" wool one is EXTREMELY HEAVY and EXTREMELY WARM, especially down here with out moderate (usually 30s F) winters. Thus my heavy weight progressively shrunk (now part of which is my favorite wool blanket), one day I may measure it out.

I agree, 4-6 yards is plenty, depending on your size, air temperature, and fabric weight.

    Check out http://www.garbtheworld.com/pgs/foldkilt.html
This guy prefers 7 yards, with 4-5 foot aprons. Obviously, if it's on the internet, it must be right.

I just bought a 4 yard piece of material. I think I'd have prefered another half yard or so, but I haven't tried wearing it for a day in the Texas sun. It may be more than sufficient.

Ok Andrew here you go. Several pictures of my interpretation of wearing a belted-plaide. Some of you have seen these before.

Argh! Your pleats are so much better than mine! Ha ha ha, practice makes better, but perfect practice makes perfect.
I'll try your advice for the aprons... see how it comes out.

BTW: Dave recommends wrapping the plaide about chest level to get the aprons lined up well. Not having the selvedge at your chest, but pulling the ends over.

I just figured I would throw that in here for those who are new to belted plaids, or to those who might be considering one.

Had to edit for some clumsy wording!
