I have always hesitated to call myself a veteran of the armed forces. I was in ROTC in college and commissioned into the Army Reserve. I did my time at OBC, but this was during the post-Gulf War RIFs and I was never able to find a slot in a unit, so I spent my entire 8 years of service in the IRR. I always felt bad about that, hence my reluctance to refer to myself as a veteran.

Didn't check any of the boxes, as I was a civilian employee of the U.S. Navy for 6 years, during which time I served at Holy Loch, Alameda, and deployed on a WestPac aboard the USS Enterprise.

    Best regards,

    Jake

    Navy Here

    USN for 12 years
    USNR for 3

Vince, when were you on the Plunger? My dad was the COB a LONG time ago on that boat (early 70s).
If they outlaw guns, can we go back to using swords?

Just hitting 16 years in the Army. Only 4 more to go. I've enjoyed most of it except for the family separation. Even with that I enjoyed Korea though. Been family doing something off and on since the revolution.

    Tony

My tale is much the same. I was ROTC (did join a reserve unit my junior year), and then graduated with my comission in 1990, the year Bush the first and Sec of Defense Cheney deciced that the military didn't need people anymore, so I did not get the active comission I had planned on. Then my reserve unit (and most others) was placed on hold from accepting officers.

I ended up being in the IRR as well (after a couple of years, I had job related issues that kept me from finding a reserve unit as well). So other than 5 months for training, I haven't really served either (but not from lack of trying).

    Still, cavalry leads the way...

My dad was too. Usually the only guys that do like to talk about it were the ones safely at the rear.
