Sat my wife and I went to the base bowling alley for lunch as they are the best available. There was a fair crowd there when we arrived but only got a couple of second glances. I was wearing my olive original UK. When our number was called and I went to get our food I noticed the 20ish girl behind the counter smiling at me. As I got closer she asked where my skean dhu was. I lifted my leg and showed the tattoo on my calf. She said no, the skean dhu and held her hands at sporran level. I told her the sporran was what was worn below the belt and she then remembered the skean dhu was the little knife. She said she had dated a Scottish man for 4 months and it was great. She seemed to like the UK and kilts in general.
Today, we had a Commander's Call at HQ. I took the UK to change into for the long drive home. My wife asked me stop at Popeye's to pick up some chicken for supper when I called to tell her I was on the way. When I walked in the store, 5 of the units NCOs were in line waiting to order. They all started laughing when I walked in then said they really didn't think I would wear it. A couple of young soldiers had come in behind me and one told his buddy it took balls to wear that. I looked around and he told me he used to have one but made the mistake of wearing it to the mall. At the mall he had run into a couple girls from his school. I asked if they had not liked it and he said no that was not it and dropped it. I guess word got around school and he got hassled a fair bit. We talked kilts and highland games while we waited to order. He and his buddy were telling me of their connections to Scotland. I encouraged him to go back to the kilt so we'll see. As I was leaving my fellow NCOs told me I was the man for wearing the kilt and they didn't think they could do it.
I've not worn pants other than uniform pants since getting back from Scotland. I'm trying to convince my wife there is no need to keep any pants and to take them to the thrift shop. She has not bought it yet but she does like the kilts. It's only a matter of time. All in all it was quite a good weekend.
YMOS,
Tony
