Kilt in Cian Tartan?
My last name being Dooley, and our ancestors coming from Roscommon county in Ireland, I've been wanting to get a kilt in the Cian clan tartan:

I wore a tie of this tartan at my wedding and put a sash on my bride and whatnot... but now I'm wanting a kilt...
The problem is, I don't want to buy a super expensive kilt, I want something I can wear on a regular basis and not worry to much if it gets screwed up... I'm thinking I'd want to spend around $250, $300 max on it... is this possible?? None of the "affordable" kilt makers carry the tartan... what other options do I have? How hard is it to make a kilt?? Do I just need to buck up and pay $500-600 for it?
If this isn't the right place for this I apologize... feel free to move it around...

You may be able to get a 5 yarder made for that price. Try Alexis Malcom . She offers "hillwalker" five yarders for around $300. Also, there is always the Matt Newsome box pleat kilt for $350. That of course depends on the availability of your tartan. Good luck to ya.

I second the suggestion to contact Alexis Malcolm:

I've got one of her 8 ydrs., and it's fantastic.

You might want to re-think that and get the best possible kilt you can manage in a family tartan. Especially if you live where the weather is conducive to large wooly items. I just received my Clarke in a Wooly/PV blend from Scotland last week http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=21236. It is a perfect weight for the SW United States and is a 7.5 yard kilt. My lady in Scotland may be able to source one for you. O'Neille

I don't know how conducive Dallas, TX is to large wooly items... what's the source you suggested? Is it actually called My Lady?
To the others, thanks for the links... I'll definitely look into them...

Captain,
The Scottish Tartans Authority shows two Cian tartans (very similar to each other). It seems that House of Tartan carries both of them - One in stock and one made to order.
Hope that helps.

What a great site! That helps huge!! Now I can at least let kilt makers know where they could buy it...
Looks like it only comes in 11 oz though... I've heard that this isn't the greatest weight for a guys kilt... is this true??

No, out of respect for the paying advertisers I thought I'd let them chime in with prospects before I touted someone that doesn't support XMTS. I'll PM you my contacts information. O'Neille
