The Kilt pin story in a nutshell:

Queen Victoria supposedly visited Balmoral Castle and reviewed the Gordon Highlanders. A strong wind was blowing and one young soldier, at attention, was in danger of being exposed as his kilt blew in the strong wind. The Queen noticed the solider's kilt flapping in the wind and how embarrassed he was. She walked over to him and removed a pin from her own clothing and pinned the overlap of his kilt. From then on it has been the tradition that when wearing Highland garb one wears a pin on the lower right of the apron.

Alan, you truly are amazing. To be able to relate to teenager at their level and just as easily relate with the staff, what a gift.

I do adult education, and as tough as that can be at times, I shudder at the challenges school teachers face with teenagers. Your stories, Alan, are not just entertaining, but are also inspiring. I really enjoy how you take unusual situations and unexpected challenges, and turn them into unique educational opportunities. That is what it is all about, and it is also something I still struggle with. Good on you, and thanks for the inspiration.
