Kizmet...do you have the time to put on your kilt and stop by the school and ask if he would be so kind as to explain to you why it's inappropriate??? I'd be intersted to see how he might respond to a man standing infront of him wearing a kilt

...and if they give you any more guff, I'd recommend that they read "How The Scots Invented The Modern World" by Arthur Herman. Basically, this book maintains that we owe the Scots everything from racial tolerance to the worldwide economic system not to mention the basic tenets that the United States are based upon. You want history? Have you ever been anywhere else on the internet where history is more in the fore than this forum?
And if "...the obvious reason..." has to do with the possbility that anything other than the Scots contributions to history might be exposed, I would suggest that the lads go forth un-regimental and that the parents give their assurances that modesty will most certainly be maintained. If the argument is that it will be a distraction to the other students....what the hell else do they think is going to happen on "Historical Dress-Up Day"?
If all else fails, have them go as Hitler and Stalin....that's historical and they wore pants.

Alas, I cannot wear a kilt because I am the mother, not D'Argo's father.
D'Argo's father does not wear a kilt, and Prestor John is out of town for the week. Maybe I should call Mystic Wolf?

Ron is exactly right. But then, there are an awful lot of bigoted idiots in the public school system.

Another Idea
I love to see how others come to help....Simplicity is sometimes best... They are indeed all good ideas...Remain call, speak with the principal and send D'Argo in his kilt. Stand strong and enjoy the day.
If by chance the VP still throws a fuss, take the time to educate the educator....You might want to remind him that congress passsed House Resolution 41, which designates April 6th of each year as "National Tartan Day.” National Tartan Day was created to recognize the contributions that were made by Scottish-Americans to the development of the United States.
Tell him...It's not just in Scotland.....! DOH

wha...kilts aren't "historic"??

As one of William Wallace's descendants, the concept that part of my family heritage is not considered "appropriate" outside of Scotland is absurd! That your son is proud of his heritage should be encouraged, not suppressed.
For that matter, even if your son (and/or his friend) don't have any Scottish heritage, the kilt certainly does have historical significance - any "educator" who cannot recognise that should hang up his/her mortar-board and go into retirement.
Kizmet, please don't think I'm angry at you or your family - far from it... it's more like 'righteous indignation' on behalf of your family.. I know that an email from Australia might not have much weight, but I'm willing to add my $0.02 worth to the sentiments from other members of this forum and let this VP know how kilted folk feel about his/her comments.

indeed a phone number or e-mail address for the the VP , the principal, or the school board would do well. this is ridiculous. i hope there aren't any Samoan, Israeli, or (pick one) kids in the school! it's too bad we can't all show up in kilts at rhe front doors of the school for historical day. thisnk the VP would have anything to say then? if you could get us an e-mail address or phone number for all of the above, i'm sure there would be plenty of us to call or write that we may sway the VP's opinion.

Stay cool, stay calm, and most of all be very polite. But go to where the buck stops and ask (as a Scottish American) for a definition of appropriate "Historic dress".

DITTO! AND, Do not relent until he consents to the wearing of clothing at school.
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?

...and all of this goes to show: if you are a school administrator DO NOT under any circumstances get this rabble roused...you will regret it to your dying day.
How about that email adress?

ps: by the way, is it possible that you guys have been watching too much Farscape? Crichton often calls Rigel "Sparky"...perhaps the young man would prefer that?
