Call the principal. Explain that your son and his friend were instructed by his vice principal that kilts are not appropriate historical dress. Ask he (him if) he could explain exactly what type of historical dress would be appropriate? Would a student of Japanese descent be told that a kimono was inappropriate?
Stay cool, stay calm, and most of all be very polite. But go to where the buck stops and ask (as a Scottish American) for a definition of appropriate "Historic dress".
