    New Hay Casual Kilt

Scottishkilts.net had a sale last month and I ordered a 5 yard casual kilt in a polyvicose material.

It came today and I put it on as soon as I got home from work, just before sunset. I was wearing a green wool sweater today so I didn't bother with a belt or a sporran. This is the Hay Ancient tartan.

    New Hay Casual Kilt (2)

Here is a back view, right out of the shipping envelope.

There was no basting stitching, but the pleats still look and feel sharp.
This is my first polyvicose and I like the look and feel.
It has a hem on the bottom and is machine sewn, but that is OK for me for something I can relax in.

Time from order to delivery was about one month. This is my 4th order from Scottishkilts.net and so far I have had no regrets.

I have two more pics to show, but I haven't figured out how to copy more than one image at a time from photobucket.

    New Hay Casual Kilt (3)

Here is the Hay Ancient lying to the left of my Hay Modern wool.
Also lying on the Ancient is a sporran I have been working on. More on that in the next post.

I like the vibrant red of the Hay Modern, but the Ancient will be worn for more casual events like Highland games.

Mr Hay, that's a fantastic looking kilt! Hay is a tartan I am well familar with as my Granddad is a Hay and owns a kilt (also modern).

    New Hay Casual Kilt (4)

Here is a closer view of the sporran shown in the previous post.
I've just started working on leather carving after a break of about 20 years.
The flap is a Welsh Dragon from the Welsh Flag (Inspired by Derek's pics of Wales)

This was a trial run using materials I had on hand. It is a little crude, but I'm learning. All the stiching and lacing were done by hand (It doesn't show well, but the gussett was laced to the back panel) I have no plans to make things for sale. I'm doing these for myself, but I appreciate the craftsmanship and inspiration of others on this forum who are much more talented and creative. I've seen some interesting embossed leather patterns, but carved leather has more depth.

As others have mentioned about the self-satisfaction of making their own kilts, I'm enjoying the challenge of making my own leather work. Next up is a belt with celtic knot work.

Thanks for letting me share my hobby with you all and I enjoy your posts and pics. I've learned a lot.

Nice looking kilt, and the sporran looks very sharp.

Great colouring, and am most impressed with the leather work. Looks like anything but crude to my eyes!

    A_Hay,

If that sporran is a crude attempt for you I dearly want to see one you think is a polished effort. Very nice work. I look forward to seeing what your belt looks like when you finish it.

    Cheers
