    Leather Kilts

I am considering a leather kilt for my next purchase. I will probably go with black but there are several different brands and styles out there, and since I can't do a side by side comparison, maybe those of you who have leather kilts can fill us in on what you like about the particular leather kilt you bought.

There are two leather kilts I've seen that were truly impressive.

One was black leather in a fully traditional three strap and buckle configuration... Very smart looking. made by 21stCentury Kilts.

The second was an R-Kilt in brown leather with brass hardware... Very sexy styling.

There are other leather kilts available but these are the two I've seen up close and was impressed with.

Oh I so do hate that...just posted a long comparison for you and it didn't take. Will try again and copy it this time if the site is down.

I have a brown leather Utilikilt, the old single pocket style with the corset lacing on the side which gives a wide size range.

Thought I was ordering a black leather UK but the old radio buttons on their old website apparently flipped on me and I never got an acknowledgement (they say that was somehow my fault) and didn't know I was supposed to get an acknowledgement...so was surprised and dissapointed when the brown showed up instead of the black. But, it smelled so good gave it a chance and today I'm glad I wound up with the brown instead of the black.

Wish UK would put instructions on working the corset lacing in with the kilt. I finally found instructions on the Internet. Its complicated for a guy with no background in corsets.

The leather is soft inside and bulletproof on the outside. Somehow its cool in the heat of the Arizona summer and toasty in the foul weather of winter. Its great on long drives, no worry about pleat creases. I often take it on weekend trips as my only kilt since its easy to dress up or dress down. It gets a lot of oooohs and aaaahhs.

With only one back pocket I normally wear it with a brown Freelander sporran or a vest for my stuff.

Funny, was pumping gas in it last weekend up in Flagstaff and the guy at the next pump asked what clan I was....started to say Bovine but played it straight. Turns out his son's getting married soon and having a kilted wedding in his family tartan.

I also have a saffron leather RKilt. I prefer to call it buckskin. The RKilt leather is just as bulletproof as the UK leather but its a bit softer. Robert of course offers many shades of leather where I think UK is now just black. Not sure what pockets UK is putting on their leather now. Robert has cargo pockets that have pockets within pockets. No need for a sporran or vest.

Robert is also happy to send you swatches of his leather colors because he knows you'll get hooked on the wonderful smell and soon be sending money his way. Rkilts uses the traditional three strap kilt closure method rather than the corset lacing that UK does.
You can't go wrong with either kilt. The value is there. I would suspect that RKilts sells more leather kilts than UK. And since Robert is doing the sewing at RKilts I would suspect he's more experienced at sewing up leather kilts than the sewing folks at UK...but could be wrong.

    Go ahead, treat yourself.

And, I have pics of both my leather kilts in the field in my galleries if that helps you any.

There's a guy here in Sierra Vista that was at the pub one night wearing a black Union Kilt heavy leather. I've wanted to get one ever since. I'm holding out to find one on this side of the pond and not have to deal with the jonesing from overseas. O'Neille

    Here Mark,

Will post the pics here, easier for you.

The RKilts saffron (buckskin)....I forgot to ask Robert for wide belt loops.

    The UK brown leather.

And, of course the UK apron is the typical UK narrow style with the six snap front.

The RKilt apron is traditional width with the three strap closure.

    You'll love whatever you select.

    Hey O'Neille,

If you've seen the Union Kilt leather kilt then you must have seen how its cut sort of gladiator style, if I remember correctly from Ham's gallery.

Ron, Union Kilts makes 2 leather kilts, the lightweight which is cut gladiator style and the heavy which is closer to traditional.

If U go the bucks then it has 2B 21st Century

I've seen Hamish's collection in the flesh and 21st Century cannot be beaten IMHO. Next but a long way back is Utilikilt followed by Union.

Well that my view. Save up and get the best it worth the wait.

I do not own any leather kilts, but I have seen / inspected 3 brands... Utilikilt, TFCK, and Rkilts.

All 3 have fantastic attributes and each one is a "different animal". All 3 have top notch sewing and costruction.

If you're looking for a STRAIGHT TRADITIONAL leather kilt and have $$$, check out TFCK.

If you like the look of the corset lacing and the narrow apron, check out UK.

If you want a custom leather kilt (custom meaning not ONLY made to fit you, but also with or without pockets or other neat gadgets) check out R Kilts. Robert is a GREAT guy and a member / advertiser on this forum.

    Exclamation Holy Cow

Union Kilts has a special on right now. Their heavy leather kilt is going for 200 pounds! That's a saving of 75 pounds from their regular price. (I think I can hear the start of a stampede.)
    I've kilt for less.
