I think the only reason I think mine looks good is because I searched the net for a couple weeks and read whatever I could find on the subject before even starting it. I also asked certain X-marks members plenty of questions.

After reading the post about making your targe, it sounds like you thought it up and did it.
I personally think if you redid yours with real leather, it would look as good or better than anything I could make

It's tempting. I admit, it's tempting. I might tackle it next Spring. I just have to locate the leather and the time. I have, let's see... uh....

* One "practice" kilt pleated to the sett in progress sitting at my feet right now.
* My XMarks kilt to do. I AM going to have this in time to wear for the XMarks Burns Supper.
* Vague promises of two more (the last two) X-Kilts to do (I may never do them, for a number of reasons)
* An X-Kilt for me. After all, I really should own an X-Kilt, ya know?
* A trad. kilt I'm doing for a friend.

No more projects until those are done!

Where'd you pick up the candle stick that you used to make the boss out of?
Could you detail a little bit more about that? A boss, or a large brass nail would be fitting for a targe...this is something I have not gotten my hands on yet.

Hey Andrew,

I got my candle holders at GoodWill.
Since the made in India brassware seems to be quite common, I don't think you'll have any problem finding these in any Second-hand or knick-knack store.
Don't pay too much, think I got mine for about 50 cents each

Most of them conveniently screw apart and sometimes have a threaded hole if you want to do a center spike.
I didn't want to bother with a removable spike, but still put a lot of thought on how I would attach the boss.
Woodsheal suggested I get one of those decorative hand-forged looking nails from Home Depot and peen it flat on the back. That idea would totally work well while giving a period correct appearance, but my personal experience with peening steel nails can be described as "Death by a million taps".
A brass nail would work, but good luck finding one....I looked!

I just got a common stainless steel nut bolt and washer.
Make sure you get the thinnest nut you can,because you don't want anything poking you on the back of the targe. After I tightened the nut down, I just cut the excess bolt off with a hacksaw and filed everything smooth.
To deal with the ugly modern bolt head on the front of the boss, just snip the shank off of one of your upholstery tacks and glue it on. I thought about using a bit of lead solder, but decided it was a bit too much hassle so i went with gorilla glue. The tack head doesn't seem like it will go anywhere for a long time!
