To me, wearing a kilt as a costume piece pretty much emphasizes in people's minds that they are costume pieces, not everyday clothing.
On the other hand, an historical costume is a costume, so that's fair game. I don't know what a "faux Great Kilt" is, but it doesn't sound like normal daily wear. I'm thinking of wearing a great kilt, too, mostly because I just got the material and haven't had the chance to wear it outside the house yet. And I'm just too lazy or too unimaginitive to put together a real Halloween costume.
