Kilt work apron: what's on my kitchen table right now
Michael Steinrock asked me to think about making him a kilt-covering work apron. Well, I have some canvas left over from my very first kilt, and its "Carhardt Caramel", so why not?
Basically, what he wants is an indestructible cover that he can strap on over his nice kilts when he's at work....Oh, and Big Mike doesn't sit at a computer screen all day! OK, so here's what's brewing. I think I'll actually finish this in about three, maybe three and a half hours including planning, cutting and sewing, but NOT including writing about it on XMarks!..
* It's canvas...one continuous piece (except for the pockets)
* It has a somewhat narrow-ish (18 inches) rectangular (not A-shaped) front panel that lies over the kilts aprons. If this were a kilt, the over apron would be more like 21-22 inches. I wanted the pleats to wrap around the hips a bit more.
* there are two big and deep "junk pockets" on the front panel.
* there's a small canvas loop-strap for tools on the front panel just below the waistband
* There are three DEEP pleats on each side, all facing backwards..8 inches deep, two inch reveal tapered to one inch at the waist.
* No pleats in the back, but the flat panels across Mikes butt will overlap about 6 inches in the back.
* closes with about 6 inches of velcro in the middle of his back (not ideal, but it'll work).
We'll see how it works out. Between the pleats and the overlap I'm hoping that will give enough freedom of movement. The work apron is 26.5 inches long. He'll fasten it just above the level of his kilt belt and it should hang down to about an inch below the selvedge of his kilt. I was thinking about making it longer, because it'll likely "ride up" when he's kneeling on the floor, wiring a plug or something, but there's a compromise between looking like a party dress and functionality. Beside, this is an experiment with leftover "stuff"..
Hopefully Mike will snap some pics with the work apron in action.

Ooops! Many apologies. I will deliver this thing to beer night, BTW, though it now seems that I won't be there for very long.
