I have a pair of tartan flashes that match my clan kilt which I reserve for more formal wear. For lesser events, it's plain flashes of a suitable color or no flashes at all. Mostly I wear a flashless elastic garter under the fold of the sock just to help keep it from sagging.

If you're gonna buy a hand sewn tartan kilt, the cheapest time to buy the matching tartan flashes is when you buy the kilt.

I like flashes for dress up - matching tartan or solid. Have been known to wear flashes with solid colored kilts. Usually don't wear them for work.

I have both matching tartan and solid color, I think the tartan flashes look very classy.

Be sure and buy the tartan flashes when you buy your kilt to assure that they match.
