... the bad news is my best man says he wouldn't be caught dead in it. (I haven't seen the tartan, but seeing my best mans wardrobe, I shutter to think what is so ugly he wouldn't be seen in it...
Tell your best man a hearty hello from someone who married into his clan, which I assume must be Mcleod of Lewis ...
Cheers

Congradulations first.
As a Scottish event planner I have dealt with this problem many times, and even a couple of times with same-sex marriages. My suggestion is this, it is not as important for the look of the wedding that everyone be in the same tartan, however they should be in the same accesories (i.e. thsame jacket, sporran etc,). This lets different families be represented and still provides the conformity that should be present in a wedding party. If you wish however it is acceptable to have the parties in the same tartan as their respective groom.
I don't think you and your partner should be in the same tartan. The two families should be represented. When we have a bride in a dress and a man in a kilt and both have tartans for the family we will have a "Changing of the Tartan" as she comes from her family to his. Tougher to do with a kilt.
You can go with distric or other organisational tartans if someone doesn't have there own.
There are many ways this can be solved but again I will emphasize that the jackets etc, should be the same just as with a tux the grooms party wouldn't wear different ones.
