A good friend, then in his late 40s, wanted a Harley. He could well afford it but knew his wife would be opposed.

So, he started bringing home library books about hang gliding. Then he brought home sales brochures for hang gliders. He let that sink in a while. Then he started looking at Harley brochures and she flat encouraged him to buy a bike.

Once he had the Harley she loved it.

Maybe you could do the same...just pick something she's most revolted or frightened by.

My story is one of sympathy

I had met my wife, but we were still in dating mode. I was training full contact fighting hard core at the time, and the team started wearing Sportkilts. Since I can't have a match, due to my job, and can only train the sport, I didn't really feel like a member of the team.

Well, I came home one night with a broken nose from sparring. I decided that was as good as a fulll membership and ordered my sportkilt. The wife did not protest, as I think she felt bad for me with a swollen face and black eyes.

I don't think she thought it would explode into what it did. The kilt addiction did not start until I got married, in a gorgeous 3 strap tank.

Now, it is just out of control she says.

But I know she loves them.

Veering off subject a bit ...
but I think if it were more widely known that sports teams wore kilts at times, it would be a huge leap ahead for acceptance by the general public.
The image of tough fighting men is probably at the far end of the spectrum from what most people think of when they hear of a soft (?) effeminate (?) skirted oddity.
I'm not keen on the product, but I think "Sportkilt" has the best trade name around. Get them making something decent, and take a note out of Utilikilts marketing schemes, and then kilting will no longer be scorned by the village idiots.

Back on topic; my French wife never found anything strange about my kilt wearing, likes GB, and rarely makes any comments about my attire.
We never tried to play the typical married couple, or care very much about what other people thought about our oddity.

Well, I didn't get one till we'd been married 22 years. I'd always liked the look but couldn't figure a reason to wear one. Then while searching for something else I found this board. After lurking and learning for a bit I started talking about wearing a kilt more. Now I have 1 UK and 3 traditional style kilts. For about two months now I've been kilted unless wearing my uniform and my wife likes the look. Now our son has an Amerikilt at college and she thinks he looks good.

Of course, my wife was used to seeing me sitting around the house in a breech clout making moccasins or sewing shooting pouches. Yes, I live part-time in the 18th century. We both have our eccentricities and are understanding and they make life interesting. Mostly though, I have a jewel of a wife.

    YMOS,

Like many others, my wife encouraged me to order a kilt when we visited Scotland last year and I balked! Then we visited two highland games and again she encouraged me to order one... finally I relented and orderd a SWK in the black Stewart. Unfortunately, it is sitting at home in a box whilst I am on a business trip....

    Hey neighbor...

Is there anything I can do to help?

    P.M. me if there is.

    Regards,

Many women like the sight of a man in a kilt... as long as it's not their man! Their imaginations run wild with thoughts such as....

-It's not what other normal men are wearing - is he going strange on me?
-What will other people think... especially my friends?
-Men are only allowed to wear pants.... what does he think he's doing?
-What's next?.... pantyhose and high heels?
-How am I going to explain this to my family...my freinds.... other people?
-I don't want that kind of attention...

The air needs to be cleared of such concerns if full acceptance is to become a reality. Take it slowly and educate, educate, educate. Be persitant if it's an important thing in your life.

    or the other approach

Get the dang kilt and wear the heck out of it. If she gives you any guff... threaten to roast marshmallows over a bonfire made of all the pants she owns.

OKAY,,,!!! You just got me into the "spew on the computer screen" club!! Good one Blu!

My wife has been supportive from the first day I put the kilt on. She has second thoughts about the money I spend on kilts and kilt related stuff, but her only real concern is that I'll get into trouble with my employer when I wear the kilt on the few "special" days that he allows it. I keep trying to push the envelope and he keeps trying to seal it shut and mail it away.

I think Blu's second option is the best

We had been going to the Highland Games at Estes Park for several years and I had kept saying I was going to get a kilt. Finally, I TOLD her that if my commisions were at the right level in March I was going to order one in April. Well, I ordered it in May instead, got it AFTER the Estes games in Sept 04 and have worn it off and on since. Have 2 now. Still trying to get her to accept it and go out and about with me. I think the Holiday Party this year might do it
