    but then, if paintings are any indication, the same color hose were worn by the Black Watch with the Govt Sett kilt.

    Exactly, Bubba! Diced hose are not supposed to "compliment" the kilt.

    The thing with the diced hose is there should be a matching color elsewhere in the outfit, in the case of the pic, perhaps a red tie or waistcoat to offset the red in the hose. It seems to me that for a nice look the hose could compliment the kilt, the jacket or other accessories. In the case of the pic in question, all we see are the shoes, hose and most of the kilt. We have no clue what else he's wearing.
