Somewhere in Texas... kilted....
The wife and I attended one of her cousins' wedding, in Sonora Texas, yesterday. We made a "fast" weekend trip out of it. I traveled in my SWK Irish Saffron. This was actually the first time I've had the oppurtunity to wear it out. I must say, I'm quite impressed. Very pleased. A teenage girl and her father approached me in JC Penney's friday night and asked where I was from. I knew what they meant and simply replied "I'm American with Scottish heritage" and smiled. The girl's eyes lit up and she exclaimed "that's awesome!" An older gentleman bellowed "now there's a Scotsman!" with enough pride that I'm certain he has some tartan in his closet, at a gas station in Ozona.
I wore my hand-sewn Henderson 5 yarder, lovat gray Argyle jacket, gray hose from hamilton dry goods, my new Steve Madden Novos, and a deep charcoalish "driver" style hat I found at Dillard's a few weeks ago to the wedding. (I should have some pictures sooner or later.) It was quite a hit, and I received numerous wonderful comments. The mother of the bride thanked me a couple of times for wearing it. She said her daughter had told them all about my and Nikki's wedding, the kilt, and all. An older lady said "that's a beautiful outfit!" I smiled and replied "thank you." She then crapped it up and said "the real question is... blah blah blah..." I simply smiled and said "I'll never tell." She seemed pleased enough with that. We left the wedding reception pretty early as everyone was starting to get "fueled up" and into party mode. I don't drink, and usually opt to retire early if given the oppurtunity.
On our way back to the hotel we decided to stop at the one store in town to see if we could find a bit of rawhide for Winston . We approached the door only to find it to be closed for the day. As we were walking back to the hotel (they were right next door to each other) some gutless puke yells "hey I like your skirt!" I turned only to see his tail lights!
This morning I donned my Ireland's National (casual,)the "what's under the kilt?" shirt I received from Rocky a few weeks ago, and my combat boots (Army issue, left-over from my Army Guard days.) We met up with Nikki's family downstairs for breakfast. They're already used to me and the kilts. So, nobody every says much of anything about it anymore. But, I got one of those questions that drags a needle across a record in movies. The lady behind the counter was watching me as I walked about the lobby. I knew she wanted to ask something or other. As I was walking out she says "Excuse me sir, may I ask you something?" I was on the defensive and was actually brewing on a reply as I was sure she was going to ask "the question." But, she asks "Are you from..." wait for it... this is GREAT... "Are you from Germany?"
errrrrrrrkkkeeeeeekkkkkkkkkkkk
"Nope, I'm born and raised American." and walked away puzzled. Nikki was as baffled as I, and we had a good rolling laugh about it out in the parking lot. Now, I haven't been to Germany in
about five years, but I've not heard about an explosion in Deutscheland kilt wearing since I left!

Poor woman, I wonder how she came up with Germany. At least she seemed to be enquiring in a friendly way, I'd take them over the 'nice skirt' mob any day.

Yep, I thought of your "are you catholic" comment as well, Alan.
I'd definately take that over the R. tard's skirt omment. But, I can't help but laugh at the silliness.

Amazing,
That's right up there with the drunk in Albuquerque hollaring at me, "Hey Switzerland!" Still my all time favorite stupid kilt comment.

I actually met some kilted guys from Switzerland whilst in Edinburgh!
But one would expect the first country on the "where you from" list to be Scotland.
Perhaps they think the Scots wear lederhosen?
