What are you reading right now?

Life is too short for reading fiction; I prefer to read something I will learn facts from.

Ah, but fiction can be a media of ideas. Communications satellites, as an example, were first described along with the concept of geosynchronous orbits by Arthur C Clark in works of fiction. The ideas for lots of things we take for granted originated in works of fiction.

I am reading about war, and peace, and a bit o' magic. I am still looking for a kilt to make it related to this site, but in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" there aren't too many kilts. I have been reading that for about 6 months or more and just don't get a lot of reading in, especially now that I am spending hours and hours programing my Light Show and putting things up outside when it is not raining or snowing.

Waiting to start reading, a biography of Benjamin Franklin by Walter Isaacson
The Odyssey, by Homer, been quite a while since I read it so needs revisiting.

Personal Reminiscences of General Robert E. Lee compiled by Rev. J William Jones
Warfare in the 18th Century a Smithsonian book

Yep, heavy on the history.

Right now I'm in the middle of Gabriel García Márquez's "Memoria de mis putas tristes." As with all his books, it is a tale of obsession, filled with his usual array of characters and magic, both in setting and in the language itself. It is (in spite of its title) a tribute to all women and the mysteries of all things feminine. This book is being sandwiched between Edward Rutherfurd's "The Princes of Ireland:The Dublin Saga" that I finished last week and its sequel, "The Rebels of Ireland."

Just started 1599 A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare by James Shapiro an absolutely fascinating insight into a crucial year in the playwright's life as well as a very interesting guide to life in Elizabethan England.

Well, I'm not reading anything right now, but I am writing a Sci-Fi novel. currently 7 months into it (part time), 6 chapters and about 30,000 words.

Thank goodness for the backspace key.

I usually have 2 to 4 books going at a time. Just finished the first 2 books of Rebel King (Hammer of the Scots and The Har'ships) by Charles Randolph Bruce and Carolyn Dale Bruce. Currently reading Clive Cussler's Skeleton Coast. Have serveral ebooks on my iPAQ and will read those at work during lunch. I know I have at least one more around here somewhere :rolleyes:

Just finished Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson, a fascinating novel about cracking the WW2 German Enigma code. Highly recommended. You will become a smarter person if you read it.
