I've had similar comments... from both men and women.

As far a comments are concerned... 98% of the time it's positive. Even so, it's a good idea to be prepared to handle the occasional idiot.

As has been said, it gets easier as you gain experience. From experience comes confidence. It's important to look natural and comfortable as though you were born to it... and not to act any differently than if you were wearing trousers. Other people can sense your confidence.

Anyway... It looks like you're off to a good start.

Congrats on the first outting. My first outting was about a month ago, and since the first time that I ventured with trepidation, it is now to the point that I just worry whether or not its clean... And as far as comments go, I've never had anybody give me a hard time, whenever anyone talks it's always positive. Unless they're drunk, but then drunkards will say stupid stuff to anybody... Just keep your head high and wear it proudly!

Thanks to all of you for your encouragement! I took my wife to dinner last night whilst kilted. Went to a very nice Italian resturant and this led to the most humorous incident of the day. While heading to the washroom, the gentlemen in front of me looked over his shoulder to see who was behind him. Upon seeing the kilt, he did a double take...... And walked right into the wall in front of him. All I could do was smile! Of course, this led to the conversation on why the kilt and what clan, etc.... Was a good end to a great day...

Now all I need to do is buy another Kilt so I can wear it more than once a week! (can any one say 'MacKinnon Hunting Ancient'?)

    First time out

Congratulations, bet you enjoyed the feeling of wearing your kilt ouside, there's nothing like it.

Amazingly when wearing a kilt we believe that every one is looking at us as we walk along the street, certainly there is always a few who stare at you but it's mostly admiration for the kilt wearer that causes these stares

I have watched guys walk along the street wearing their kilt without getting a second glance, people are walking by with their own thoughts in their heads, too often we are too self-conscious about ourselves. Certainly the more you wear the kilt the less self-conscious you become and at times you don't even realise you are wearing a kilt. Of course I stay in Scotland where kilt wearing, particularly with young people has become increasingly popular in recent years, although you do get the occassional wolf whistle from other guys teasing you about your 'skirt' and shouting 'I hope you are a true Scot'.
but is there anything worse than being ignored?

Having said that, wearing a kilt is always an adventure and you can never have a day's kilt wearing without engaging in frequent conversations with strangers who want to talk to you about your kilt and how they would love to wear one.

Have many pleasant days kilting and enjoy yuouself.

I totally agree with Julie. EVERY TIME I wear mine it is an adventure. Even if you are not wearing a kilt if you have on a Balmoral Bonnet, Shorts, and Kilt socks I get people coming up to me asking about Scotland. Or (Germany?) I'll explane about the clan badge (Wallace) and my Granpa Wallace and if they are interested I will direct them to this forum. Of course I live in Utah where lots of people are interested in their heritage.

Wear the kilt as often as you like.

In my experience over the last couple of years, it's the weak ones that will try to give you some guff about wearing a kilt. Stand strong, stand proud, and remember that when you sit down you are SUPPOSED to spread your legs!
