    Welcome back!

I want to be the first to say -

The upgrades of the forum and portal software are finally complete. We're still buffing up some of the rough edges, but I hope within the next week or so, the last 15-16 hours will be no more than a bad memory.

I've been adding some functionality to the forum and I hope you will all be able to realize some benefit from them. As mentioned earlier, you now have the option of viewing your current weather conditions on the portal page.

You will also notice there is a new module at the bottom of the forum home page, to show all the members that have been logged into the forum today. And I've added a couple of tweaks to that module, so you will be able to see the search engine spiders that are visiting this site.

As changes and updates are made, I will try to keep adding to this thread, so you will be able to see and understand more of what is happening in this asylum we call X Marks.

    Thumbs up

I like all the new smilies!!! Thanks!!

On a different tangent -- I usually access the forum in "new post" mode after I log in, and I really like the abiliity to quickly see all the posts since I last visited. However, on occasions, I remember that I want to reply to a post that no longer shows up on the "new" list. To do that, I've been clicking on the "Portal" link, then the "Forums" link from the portal, then the forum category . . . is there a short-cut way to get from the new posts listing to the main forum page? Thanks!

All I want is a way to get directly to the main forum page. The Forum page button leads me to:

    Not Found

The requested URL /forum/forum.php was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I am not sure if this is a Safari/Mac issue, everyone, or just me.

Agian, Mike, thanks for all your work and your 13+ hour day!

If one of those mugs is mine, that will be thanks enough!

Easy-peasy. Look up, above the posts or threads or forums, whatever you may be viewing and you will see a dark blue bar with some menu selections in it (where you selected New Posts, actually). That is the navigation bar, or NavBar. Right above the NavBar, you will see what vBulletin calls a 'breadcrumb navigation" scheme. It will say something like X Marks the Scot - A Kilted Community > General Kilt Talk > General Kilt Talk Welcome Back!

If you click on the X Marks the Scot bit, you will be whisked away to the forum home page. If you click on the first General Kilt Talk, you're off to the General Kilt Talk forum category. If you click on the second General Kilt Talk, you will go back to the thread display for this particular forum section.

OK, what I want you to do is clear out your cache and your cookies. Your browser has cached a forum page that I was testing, earlier today, when I was experiencing all the difficulty with the portal.

If you clear out your cache, and then click on the Forum button, you will arrive at http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/index.php?

If the problem persists, send me a PM with more details and we'll get you through it.

I don't have a clue as to how to go about clearing cache/cookies in Safari, so I'm going to leave you to your own devices on that one. If a Mac/Safari user sees this, could you please drop MacWage a PM with some helpful advice?

I'm still adding features and optimizing the software.

You'll see some large tags that will identify the forums, the forum descriptions and the thread titles, just below the NavBar. If we make words easier for humans to see, search engines 'see' them easier too. If we can get more pages indexed with the search engines, that means more visitors to the forum, with each one being a potential new member.

I've changed the way the forum stores a portion of each page, so they will load faster and take some load off the server.

I changed over to a faster text search method, that will also take some load off the server.

And you'll be hard-pressed to miss your next new Private Message, as there will be a large, graphic reminder of it, up in the Welcome block.

As you are reading threads, you will notice some new information at the bottom of the page. Other members that are viewing that thread will be shown, as well as threads that are similar to the one you are reading.

So, tell me - are we havin' fun yet?!?

I cleared cache (easy on a Mac), but the link is still:
    http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/forum.php?
    NOT
    http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/index.php?

Instead I just bookmarked the forum directly.
If I can't resolve an issue, I'll PM ya tomarrow (after I play with it tonight).

Anyone else having this linked or is it REALLY just me?

AGAIN, Thanks for all your work Mike!!!

Mike, looks great. I love the quick reply feature. I always found it a pain to have to go to a new page for a reply.

Will check out some of the other features.
