Not another targe

With all the targes being built I finally got in gear and completed the one I had been working on.

Front is two layers of 5 ounce leather and 450 brass tacks
center boss started life as a candlestick base

Without the plug



Back is two layers of blanket wool covered with German oil tan Elk hide

with spike in place,

Hand filing and threading the spike from a 3/4" bolt took more time then I thought.

It took about twenty five hours from design to finished targe.

All I have left to do is to attach the strap to carry it on my back and then I'm ready for the next Jacobite uprising

Excellent job! I don't see how you could improve upon it. I like how you embosssed the leather. Did you do that while the leather was wet? What tool did you use? (I've used the back of a butter knife in lieu of anything better...!)

Frighteningly deadly lookin'. There's a small targe-like shield with a flintlock pistol mounted in its center in the Harding Collection of Arms and Armour at the Art Institute of Chicago...in case you needed any ideas for the next one.
