Thank you for all the kind words and positive feed back it makes all the effort worthwhile.

In my research I found that around 25% of Tages had a removable spike
Woodsheal Excellent job! I don't see how you could improve upon it. I like how you embosssed the leather. Did you do that while the leather was wet? What tool did you use? (I've used the back of a butter knife in lieu of anything better...!)
I drew the pattern lightly in pencil then wet the leather after it was glued to the wood
I used a metal stylus fron tandy leather about $3.00
I made a compass by drilling holes in a piece of wood at the right distances from the the center hole in the shield and and struck the arch in the wet leather. Just press and draw circle, you may have to go overe it a few times to get it deep enough.

I used the same arrangement to draw the circle for the targe on the plywood

I'll post a picture of the set up and the stylus tomorrow, easier to show a picture than explain it

auld argonian Frighteningly deadly lookin'. There's a small targe-like shield with a flintlock pistol mounted in its center in the Harding Collection of Arms and Armour at the Art Institute of Chicago...in case you needed any ideas for the next one.
There are several like that in the Tower of London colllection
I've seen some using Matchlock pistols and some using flintlock pistols

I also happen to build muzzleloaders
    So maybe..................?

The stick-compass is very clever! I'll remember that for my next targe project for sure (and I may contact you about turning out a spike for me...!)

Hmmm... think you could share a more detailed "how-to" on making one of these? It'd look right nice when I'm in Ren. Faire garb!

I"ve got another one planned out in my head
and have everything I need on hand
I could probably be talked into photographing the progress of the next one at various stages of construction, if there would be any interest to the board.
