Oh yeah, elitist class snobbery!
Are you saying you don't feel contempt for these welfare check collecting types? The people who look at you odd, because they cannot respect or comprehend someone else's culture other than their own, and only care about respecting culture if theirs ISN'T the one being respected? I honestly try to be tolerant of people, and for the most part, I do a good job...some people though sort of foster such perspectives by their reactions to cultural symbols of others though.

Example of postive interaction: Shell gas station, last night, around 9:20pm, Pacific Highway and Campus Drive, Federal Way, WA.
"Scotsman huh?"
"Yup"
"Cool, how much Scot are you"
"Well, I was born there, if that = enough"
"Right on, I was actually born in England (I want to say Lancaster)"
"Neat, military family?"
"Yeah"
Random chit-chat for a bit about going to military/DOD schools, and moving around while the tank is filling up, the girl at the opposite pump asks if I have anything underneath, they guy I was talking to mentions that was, in fact, a rather inappropriate question, I laugh and tell her that since people always feel the need to ask, that people will keep on wondering. We all chuckle, and go our ways.
All in all, a much more positive experience than I expected filling up at a gas station in the middle of Federal Way (where there seems to be an abundance of ghetto), on a snowy evening.

Typically I get asked if I am cold, and I mention that people are seriously underestimating the warmth of wool. Then there seems to be the proverbial palm to the forehead...DUH! I should have known that reaction.
