Weather for kilts???

As one who lives in the "it seldom snows here" part of the country, I'll have to say something to defend the "irrational" reaction to the white stuff.

Before I begin, I enjoy snow. That said:

The snow we get are very wet snows. I (and my father) have experienced only 1 (ONE!!) dry snow, in a freak storm about 3 years ago (if I remember correctly). What we get is largely ice, though it makes GREAT snowballs. After the initial fall, it partially melts and refreezes, leaving a nice ice layer. There is NO snow pack to get rubber traction, and few, if any, have chains (or spiked/studded tires) to drive on the ice. Thus, cars slide ALL over the road.

In Atlanta, I would always challenge my "it don't look THAT bad" friends from "up north:rolleyes: " to look at the tags of cars in ditches and trees along the sides of the roads once the weather improved enough to actually travel on it. In variably, there would be "New York" "Pennsylvania" "Maine" Wisconsin" "Minnisota" "Michigan" and the like all over the place . The roads are actually MUCH worse than they look, mostly black ice with a thin veneer of snow to hide it .

That said, we have NO IDEA of the sheer COLDNESS that y'all experience and the problems with snow drifts, shoveling and sanding the driveway, or the need for "winter beater" cars.:confused:

Now, if a PV can be warm in THAT weather, I am VERY impressed.

I figured a belted plaid would be even MORE practical than a regular kilt, as the upper wool part would provide much extra warm layering to the torso. My belted plaids are just "HOTTT!" here, even in the dead of winter.
A belted plaid and trenchcoat (to help keep the wool dry) should be great.



But what do I know I live in SOUTH CAROLINA!!!!!!!:rolleyes:

I haven't been out in a bad snow storm yet, but the times I was out with my black Survival from UK, it helped keep my legs and shoes dry, because the rain didn't hit that area, just got the kilt wet, but I didn't feel it. We do have a winter weather watch coming up, and I will be wearing a Mocker this weekend, so we'll see.

I've been out in snow in my 16oz kilts. Kilts are more practical than trousers when there is snow on the ground and you are wearing boots because trouser legs get caught in the boots and trail on the snow and get very wet and dirty.

Not been out in weather that beat the kilt yet, must admit, Carlisle does not get very extreme weather conditions, as we are sheltered by the Penines(Mountains). Does get very cold sometimes though

... And why is it when they say a storm is coming, everyone buys all the milk and bread? This is Alabama, we're not going to be snowed in until the spring thaw! Besides, if I'm going to be stuck here, I plan on eating more than bread with a milk chaser.

You would not believe what happens in the DC area when snow threatens. The grocery stores are emptied in a couple of hours. Don't these people have supplies in the basement?

Well the roads were "drivable" today if you drove slow and payed attention. We have extreamly bad drivers no matter what weather it is but they get extreamly stupid in weather like we just had. About every major street here has had at least for or five non engery accedents. Anywho, as far as being out in the sleet yesterday it was because the job I have is on a college campus and I deliver various electronic equipment to class rooms which requires me to walk back and forth from the library (which is where my department is) and what ever building it is on campus that the equipment is being delivered to. It was really nice to have my trench on in the sleet as it deflected the dang stuff off of me. The snow we got was a very rare dry snow but tomorrow the temp. is supposed to get to 34 so I'm sure it will be slush and then ice tomorrow night just like the roads are tonight.

We've been getting some nice snow here, not a whole lot, but it's nice to get real snow and not slushy muck!

Anyway, kilts are much better in cold weather than jeans for several reasons. The two biggest in my mind are the bottoms of the jeans getting wet and cold, and jeans are one layer of fabric fairly tight against your skin with no insulating layer of air. Of course, kilts also have their disadvantages in cold weather, but when I'm out and about I have no problem in my kilt. I'm planning on going snowshoeing this winter kilted once we've got enough to blaze a good trail.

Been planning on doing the same myself... Haven't snowshoed since 1994, want to get back into doing it again badly. May do it next weekend.

I wore my mocker to a play last night - it was 18 degrees (F) with a slight breeze with about a 2-block walk and the boys and I were fine, but my hands were cold.

Randy is right! grocery stores must not watch the weather reports of impending snow storms. I on the other had, have squirrelled away enoght tiolet paper and other essentials to last out a storm, bedause I don't want to be on the roads during a heavy storm with the drivers that have moved to the Washington area and have never driven in the snow before. The corridor between Richmond and Philly is just packed with people that have never seen snow fall. Where is this place and can I go there for the winter?
