My family has a long history of military service. I am the only respected male member of my family that did not serve. I had an eye shot out with an arrow when I was 2. The piece that your daughter did really got to me deeply. She did a very good job.

Nope - she just did it in her spare time between classes yesterday. She's a piper and she's also in Air Force ROTC (she'll commission this spring when she graduates), and both things mean a lot to her. So, it just came from the heart.

When she applied to college, one of the essays she was asked to write was a 100-word essay describing where she would travel to and why if she could go anywhere for two weeks (could be in the past, present, or a fictional place). Here's what she wrote as a 17-year-old:

"I’m sitting in the mud; it’s 1916 on the Somme. I am identified by my comrades as a bagpiper, but, until now, I had never experienced the true power of the Great War Pipes. Two weeks ago, I found myself standing in a recruiting line, my hair shorn close to my head. Now, my training over, I lead the Gordon Highlanders. We leap from the trenches and run forward in a mass charge against an enemy that we cannot even see, and through it all, the pipes, _my_ pipes, call the Highlanders to battle."

Very nicely done. My faith for the future is growing every time I see things so well done by kids and young adults. A few years ago that faith was almost gone. Are parents getting better at parenting? I think they are.
