Culture Shock!
I was in an Army Barracks taking a shower when an Army female came in a showered next to me in what was a big square room with showerheads on the walls sort of like the shower scene in Starship Troopers. Well it was really wierd for about 10 seconds then it was normal.
I got a less than nice reception on two occasions in the past and in both cases it was from teenage girls. I guess that teenie boppers beleive that they have the exclusive rights to look good in tartan un-bifercated garments.

Jim,
What is real funny is when I don't wear the kilt to Home Depot the clerks want to know what is wrong. . I generally tell them " Climbing a ladder today".

Well said, Jim. I am very seldom on the receiving end of any comments thesedays, complimentary or otherwise, but if I am asked, "Why?" my response is usually, "Comfort!"

The most uncomfortable I have been is when a waitress at a local casual resteraunt asked me the question. Usually, this doesn't bother me. Having an ill developed sense of modesty and an uncanny knack for not embarassing much at all saves me from that. What made me uncomforable was the fact that A) I was indeed regimental at the time and B) My wife was right across from me. Oh... and the wife was unaware that A) was true. I merely said "I'll leave that to your imagination." Unfortunately, this didn't go over well with either woman. *shrugs*

Like I need the encouragement
Ran to the store a little while ago to pick up some necessities (Arrogant Bastard Ale and jalapeno potato chips) wearing my mocker. Caught a couple of girls using a cell phone to take a picture, and another locked up her brakes to avoid taking out a shopping cart in the parking lot while I was going back to the car. What fun!

I went to the grocery store for Thanksgiving shopping dressed in Gordon Modern, turtleneck, kilt jacket, hose, flashes, and shoes, with skunk sporran. Only two comments, both positive. I think a lot of people are so wrapped up in what they are doing that by the time what they see actually registers on their "react to it" center the kiltie has moved on. I did get a "Woo-Hoo!" and a thumb's up while walking along the street from passing cars.

On Wednesday, I threw on a pair of soft jeans to do some errands mostly because I didn't want to take the time to consider a nicer kilt ensemble. On my way out of the Kroger grocery store, one of the clerk-baggers stopped me and said, "This is the first time that I've seen you in here without your kilt." That made me laugh, astonished that not only am I noticed for wearing the kilt but also for NOT wearing it. I told her that I was just being lazy. She said I looked good in the kilt.
There's no getting around the fact that people who wear kilts stand out from the crowd, I guess.

I have a feeling kilt wearing will greatly add to my 'stare value' here though one of my students told me that highland dress and kilts are well known in Japan most call kilts skirts. It's going to be fun to mess with some minds when the kilt arrives!

When I first wore my kilt (first day my OD green UK arrived) it was to Wal-Mart. My wife had no idea it had arrived and was meeting me there. She was furious and I had butterflies in my stomach like crazy... I mean c'mon... a kilt in Texas? Well, I got through Wal-Mart with not much other than a few wayward stares and the eyes of my wife boring a hole in the back of my head. The next couple of times I went out kilted I was nervous for a few minutes... but after that all was well. Now I don't give a rip what people say and/or think -- after all it couldn't be worse than what the close-minded people at my work/church say every time I wear it around them (or mention anything kilt related)... I'm comfortable, proud, and big enough to make sure no one has a problem with that...
There is one place I still like to gauge reactions at... We have a convenience store about a mile down the road and I go there often in the kilt... I live in what is probably the first bit of rural outside of the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex on the east side... My wife likes to keep tabs of the comments and stares I get as she sits in the car waiting on me to grab the coke or whatever I was going in there for... The girls that work there see me in a kilt at least once or twice a week and still ask me what's up with the skirt. I guess I've blown their rural Texas minds so much they just can't get over it...
